An independent expert letter can help an EB2 NIW case, but only when the expert adds something the record can verify.
The common mistake is starting with: “Will you support my petition?”
That invites a generic endorsement. Start with a different question: can this person independently evaluate the proposed endeavor and explain why the evidence matters beyond one employer, school, or client?
Use this four-part screen
1. Topic fit
Can the expert explain the problem you are working on and why it matters in the field? A recognizable title is not enough if their expertise does not overlap with the proposed endeavor.
2. Independent proof
Can they point to public artifacts, studies, deployments, standards, or measurable outcomes? The letter should not depend only on facts supplied by the applicant.
3. Field baseline
Can they explain what is common, what is difficult, and what would be unusually useful if your claims are verified? This comparison is more useful than broad praise.
4. Original evaluation
Can they write from their own review instead of repeating your resume or petition language? The strongest letter sounds like an expert conclusion, not an edited recommendation template.
Send a review packet, not a praise request
A practical packet can be short:
• one paragraph describing the proposed endeavor
• three to five evidence artifacts
• the specific claims you want evaluated
• four to six questions the expert can answer in their own words
Then ask the expert to make three things clear: what they reviewed, what they concluded independently, and why that conclusion matters beyond your immediate job.
Recommendation letters do not replace the evidence map. They work best when they help a reader understand a fact that already has support in the record.
Keep legal framing, deadlines, and final prong selection with qualified immigration counsel. Use the expert for the expert judgment.
